Philadelphia Gas Works | Headquarters Renovation

800 West Montgomery Avenue | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Watson completed a comprehensive interior renovation of Philadelphia Gas Works’ corporate headquarters, transforming more than 100,000 square feet of outdated office space into a modern, efficient workplace designed to support the organization’s employees and operations.

PGW’s headquarters serves as an important administrative center for the largest municipally owned natural-gas utility in the United States. Renovating the facility required Watson to modernize the workplace while allowing PGW’s teams to continue managing essential services for customers across Philadelphia.

The project was delivered through carefully planned construction phases. Employees and departments were temporarily relocated as individual work areas were renovated, completed, and returned to service. Each phase had to remain aligned with PGW’s operational schedule so staff could continue working throughout construction.

Watson coordinated demolition, building-system modifications, interior construction, finishes, furniture installation, and final turnover across a large occupied office environment. Detailed logistics plans governed access, material deliveries, temporary pathways, noise-producing work, and the separation of construction zones from active offices.

The phased approach required more than managing a sequence of rooms. Department moves, technology connections, life-safety systems, inspections, and occupancy milestones had to be coordinated so completed areas were fully functional before employees transitioned into them. Watson worked closely with PGW stakeholders to address evolving needs and keep each stage moving forward.

The renovated workplace introduced updated offices, meeting areas, and collaborative spaces that better support both focused work and communication among teams. Improved finishes and a more cohesive interior environment created a professional workplace reflective of PGW’s role as a major public utility and long-standing Philadelphia institution.

Attention to detail remained essential through the final stages of construction. Watson monitored quality across multiple phases, coordinated corrective work, and managed closeout activities so each completed area met the same standard regardless of when it was delivered.

The Philadelphia Gas Works Headquarters Renovation demonstrates Watson’s ability to manage a large-scale workplace transformation inside an operating organization. Through disciplined phasing, communication, and quality control, Watson renewed more than 100,000 square feet without requiring PGW’s essential administrative operations to stop.

A modern workplace delivered around the uninterrupted operations of an essential Philadelphia institution.
