CHOP Wood Decant | Bid Package 3

CHOP Main Hospital | 3401 Civic Center Boulevard | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Watson led Bid Package 3 of CHOP’s Wood Decant program, a carefully phased relocation of Critical Care, ECMO, and Emergency Department functions across Wings 1, 8, and 9 of the Main Hospital.

At an active pediatric hospital, decanting involves far more than moving people and equipment from one area to another. Each receiving space must be fully constructed, inspected, commissioned, and operational before a clinical function can transition. Medical equipment, technology, utilities, staff workflows, patient access, and life-safety systems must all be ready to perform from the moment the new space opens.

Watson developed and managed detailed phasing plans that coordinated construction activities with CHOP’s clinical and operational schedules. Each relocation was sequenced around patient-care needs, department access, temporary conditions, equipment transfers, and required system shutdowns. Close communication with hospital leadership and clinical teams helped ensure that each department could move safely and efficiently without interrupting essential services.

Because the work extended across multiple hospital wings, every phase depended on the successful completion of the one before it. Watson tracked milestones, coordinated trades, verified space readiness, and resolved field conditions before transitions occurred. This disciplined approach reduced operational risk and gave hospital teams confidence that their new spaces were prepared to receive staff and patients.

The Wood Decant program reflects the type of work that often happens behind the scenes of a major healthcare transformation. By relocating critical clinical functions safely and methodically, Watson helped CHOP maintain continuous operations while creating the space and flexibility needed for future improvements.
